Weekend read: Rebecca Coriam: lost at sea

This week’s article is one of Jon Ronson’s for The Guardian, looking at the disappearance of cruise ship workers, and Rebecca Coriam’s case in particular. It’s an article that asks more questions than it answers, and is really quite harrowing.

Weekend read: Traffic at LaGuardia Airport, New York

My recommended read this weekend is a fascinating profile in GQ of the air traffic controllers at LaGuardia Airport in New York. It’s a few years out of date now, and I’m not sure if they still work under quite the same conditions… but it’s arresting to think that they ever did!

Weekend read: Fatal distraction

The article I’m recommending this week is totally heart-rending: forgetting a child in the backseat of a car is a surprisingly common cause of childhood mortality. Gene Weingarten’s article in the Washington Post looks at the emotional and differing criminal repercussions.

Weekend read: Another night to remember

The Costa Concordia disaster seems like it happened years ago to me – but it happened only back in January. Vanity Fair’s article on the sinking was the best I read, and parts of it still send a shiver down my spine today! It’s definitely worth a read.

Weekend read: Do no harm

I generally make a point of not featuring items that are behind paywalls, but this week I’m making an exception. Matter, a publishing project I’ve been supporting for a little while now, has finally launched.

Their first story is about body integrity identity disorder, and the ethics of cutting off healthy limbs. It’s written by Anil Ananthaswamy, who you might know as a New Scientist contributor or author of The Edge of Physics. Anyway, the story is a brilliant insightful piece, and well worth your attention and 99p.

If, however, I’ve failed to convince you… there’s also a free extract on The Guardian’s site. Normal service, without paywalls, will be back next Friday.

Weekend read: The gambler who blew $127m

This week’s recommendation is an article from the Wall Street Journal, in which Alexandra Berzon sets out the extraordinary story of Terrance Watanabe and his huge loss over the course of a year in Las Vegas. To me, it’s a shocking tale of corporate irresponsibility – but I’m quite sure others will see it differently.

Weekend read: How do supervised drug clinics work?

Vancouver is the only city in North America which has a legal supervised centre for IV drug users to inject themselves in safe conditions. This week’s recommended article by Paul Hebert from The AWL looks at how this works in practice.
