Weekend read: The frequent fliers who flew too much

This is a great story from the LA Times by Ken Besinger. It’s about how American Airlines sold tickets for unlimited first-class travel which ended up costing the company a huge amount of money. It has schadenfreude by the bucketload.

Weekend read: How Britain fell in love with Krispy Kreme

I’m featuring another of the Guardian’s retail analyses this week, and once again it’s by Emine Saner. This one is all about the rise and rise of Krispy Kreme in the UK. I just wish public health could emulate the marketing success built by some of these hugely successful brands in a very short space of time!

Weekend read: Abercrombie and Fitch: for beautiful people only

There have been lots of analyses of the retail cult of A&F written over the years, and this one from Emine Saner in The Guardian is as good as any. If you’re not young enough to be familiar with A&F (that is, if you aren’t in your mid-teens), this is a great primer.

Weekend read: Love finally dies

Regular readers will know that I really like Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies, and so I was a little disappointed after it was panned by critics and closed in the West End after just over a year. It’s since had quite some success in Australia and on DVD around the world, but this blog from Mark Shenton of The Stage just after the closure was first confirmed has a great analysis of what was wrong – and what was right – with the show.

Weekend read: The reality of an “ex-gay” life

This week, I’m recommending a very deep and searching article by Gabiel Arana from the American Prospect magazine. It’s a very personal article about his experience of his exposure to the ‘gay cure’ movement. It’s a stunning, achingly honest bit of writing.

Weekend read: A way to love the new version of Dad

Weekend read: How Aaron Sorkin ruined politics

This week, I’ve chosen to recommend an article I really don’t agree with: Shana Pearlman’s argument that Aaron Sorkin produces rubbish television and has ruined politics. I love Sorkin’s drama, but was intrigued by the opposing view… even if Pearlman’s argument is a little undermined by spelling her target’s name wrong in the headline. The article is from the Dale & Co blog.

Weekend read: Why is this container so radioactive?

I’m featuring another health-related Wired feature this week: a fascinating article about the investigation surrounding a mysterious radiation-emitting shipping container which reached port in Genoa, Italy. It’s a really brilliant bit of writing.

Weekend read: I’m a smoker who doesn’t smoke

This week, I’ve chosen a great Comment is Free article by Victoria Coren, outlining her experience of giving up smoking. I think it’s instructive both for Public Health people like me, and probably to some degree for smokers.

The great draw-quote for me was this: “People would point out the health risks (as though they might not have occurred to me, despite most of my family dying from cancer), without understanding that the health risks didn’t matter because I cared more about smoking than I did about living.”

It’s well worth a read!
