Jon Stewart: The Daily Show post-9/11

I’ve never seen this in full before.

Suddenly I see why people responded to Stewart’s speech moreso than those of Government bods, newcasters, and celebrities. It’s painfully honest.

THANK YOU for putting this up! I was trying to find this for a friend and of course Viacom is all over YouTube. It’s simply stunning television (how often do those two words get put together?), Jon Stewart at his finest.

Thank you! Since Comedy Central, in their wisdom, had this pulled from YouTube, I’ve been looking everywhere for it. It’s a relief to find a watchable version.

Thanks you.

Even though I am not an American, I found this speech deeply moving.
When I first saw it, I couldn’t stop thinking that this was the speech Bush should have given.

Respect to John Stewart.

I think everyone would agree that Jon Stewart is a fantastic comedian and a great orator. I only wish the establishment realised quite how much the USA need him – and how much we need someone like him over here in the UK.

I’m so glad this link is still active. Thank you for keeping this accessible. This speech is incredible, and I only wish I had seen it at the time. It stills has the power to move me to tears almost 6 years after the tragedy of 9/11.

Amazing… just as powerful as seeing it “live” 6 years ago. Never forget. Never lose focus. And put that bastard Osama bin Laden in the ground.

Churchill led Britan to stand up against the terror of the V2 attacks and bombing of London. Go about your business or they will have won should they break our spirits.

How did we respond to 9/11 and the bombings in London and Madrid? We capitulated to their terror by pissing on ourselves. Two World Wars won last century and we’re nations afraid of too much toothpaste on an airplane.

Osama didn’t take my freedoms away, my government did.

Mission Accomplished.

Sometimes I forget how much I love this place and the times we have peace. Its so easy for everyone to seem like the enemy, but its not us, its corrupt politicians from every nation that shame us all.

Jon Stewart is one of the only men on TV who consistently speaks the truth. Not just his mind, but the truth. He’s right about the US, that it is a wonderful thing that a show like his and comments like his can be made. The sad truth, however, is that 6 years on not much has changed. In fact, things are worse. Civil liberties in the US are all but gone, and in the wake of the tragedy of 9/11 the US administration has gone on to create a horrible tragedy of their own in Iraq. Let us not forget that Bush originally linked these tragedies to Saddam. People need to wake up and take a stand against a federal government that no longer serves the best interests of its people, and has not for some time. This is not a party issue, it is a fundamental issue about what is really important. The only way a “free” US can continue to exist is to fundamentally change the way it does it’s business, at home and abroad. Wake up America. Do it by voting. It’s the only way…to really achieve MLK’s dream of being free at last.

I wish I had seen this on 9/11 six years ago. I too was torn apart by the loss of human lives, but my heart was forever warmed by “our” response to the tradgety. I am so proud of our fellow Americans. Thanks for keeping this available. I needed it even now.

TKG wrote “Civil liberties in the US are all but gone”

Please enumerate for us those civil liberties you have lost.

Freedom of Speech? Who in the US has been jailed for speech?
Freedom of Assembly? The Truthers, Code Pink, A.N.S.W.E.R. are all constantly announcing and participating in demonstrations.
Freedom of Religion? Any examples of anyone losing this civil liberty?

Your hyperbole is all too common and all too unjustified and damaging to the fabric of civil discourse

alesian_siege wrote Please enumerate for us those civil liberties you have lost.

See, there was this little thing called, “The Patriot Act” which was sort of a blank check for the government to, among other things enter anyone’s home at any time, tap their phones, and take or destroy whatever property they wished – The victim (formerly known as “innocent until proven guilty”) was not only unable to do anything about it, but the government could *legally* conceal/deny that they were ever there.

But then, I suppose me reminding you of just that one example would be considered dangerous and damaging hyperbole.

Moving and honest and better than anything the pros put out — but I wonder what he would have said if he’d known that we don’t get bin Laden, that we would lose so many freedoms in the name of fighting terrorism and that we get into a pointless war in Iraq that kills so many. He said the perfect thing at the right time, but given where we went, I wonder what he would say about it now.

The great thing about The Daily Show is that Jon has been commenting on this event and how the current administration has handled it ever since the show went back on the air. The most recent one that sticks out in my mind was his response to Bush’s speech about Japan’s pre-emptive strike on Pearl Harbor in comparison to Iraq. Jon: “And that is why, in 1941, America invaded China. What?”

Interesting stuff.

But have any of you watched the documentary, “911: In Plane Site”?

All the fottage coem from CBS’ own publicly released DVD on the events of that fateful day, September 11th.

I urge anyone who wants to start uncovering the real truth of what happened that day, to watch this doco.

I had to watch it several times, as I didn;t want to believe what I was seeing.

We have been fooled, and lied to and manipulated!

There was no “plane” in the wreckage at the Pentagon. There was no plane in the field in Pennsylvania, the two planes that hit the Twin Towers had no woindows, and a large “pod” of some sort attached to the underbelly.

And then there is the obvious explosions detonating in the buildings after the aircraft impacts.

The truth is terrifying…

This speech, now almost 7 years on, is still moving and important. I think the troubling thing about this video is not the attempt at humor (which was quite successful at a tough time) but was the nativity of not just Jon, but the country, and the world. I’m not going to go on and make another Bush-Is-A-War-Criminal speech, I just want to point out that no, watching these videos, it just feels as though the world had a chance to come together. What happened instead? War.

You take every Documentary you watch as truth? Because there’s a HELL of a lot more evidence supporting the actual cause of this attack.

No one set US up. You got setup when you bought into that highly left-wing bullshit documentary.

As a minor who is almost too young to remember the attacks and was definitely too young at the time to understand what they meant, this speech made me cry so hard I could not see the screen through my tears. We are human, and we love, and we hold each other. Not because it’s the right thing to do, or because it’s the smart thing to do, but because it’s what we do. Every day.

I remember watching this original broadcast after several days of being bombarded with 9/11 coverage. I recall how much I needed some relief from that disaster and looking forward to Jon’s return to the air. Watching it again I still cried-but it was different given the historical context of his words from this side of the calendar. Thanks for sharing this!
