Photo-a-day 47: Wolfson Research Institute

20120216-163025.jpg

The Wolfson Research Institute used to be a white shining beacon of academia on the South bank of the Tees. Today, it’s looking a bit dull and grim, like it needs a good scrub – though, in fairness, the grey skies don’t help!

Photo-a-day 46: Quiescence

20120215-211844.jpg

Meet Quiescence, my slightly under-nourished buddy from medical school!

Quiescence’s best friend, Buttons, stands proudly atop a bookshelf. But when we moved into this flat, we never quite found anywhere for poor Quiescence – and so he’s been lazing on the sofa-bed ever since! He doesn’t seem to mind…!

Photo-a-day 44: Postbox (and some related questions)

20120213-222311.jpg

Does anyone remember when and why the Royal Mail stopped listing all collection times on postboxes? I’d imagine it’d be useful info if you wanted to give your postie a parcel that wouldn’t fit in the box.

I think that this little info notice used to be called a “Collection Plate”: I remember the homonymous connection with church amusing me as a child. Is that right, and has the name changed now that the function has (a bit)?

Photo-a-day 43: WHSmith “unable to open”

20120212-151428.jpg

Whoever has the slightly dull task of writing business continuity plans for WHSmith branches might want to revisit their work tomorrow morning: this large two-floor branch in one of Britain’s biggest shopping centres is completely closed today. Frustratingly, they haven’t even managed to point out in their “Sorry” notices that the centre’s other branch is open as usual.

In stranger news, just days after I suggested that the shopping centre across the river should invest in a Flight-Stop-esque artwork, look what turns up at the Metrocentre:

Photo-a-day 42: The Penshaw Monument (and a cow)

20120211-175134.jpg

Wendy was quite insistent that today’s photo should feature one of the many cows we came across while out and about today, so I’ve included one in this shot (bottom left)!

And here’s another shot of the Penshaw Monument, a little closer up:

Photo-a-day 41: Jesmond Dene with a bit of snow

20120211-092034.jpg

Yesterday was the first time I forgot all about this project – just after a biblical 40 days!

To make up for the missing photo, here’s one from Jesmond Dene, taken last Sunday in the snow.

Photo-a-day 40: Roomba

20120209-222006.jpg

This is Roomba, our deeply futuristic vacuum-cleaning robot. We adopted her about 10 months ago, and she’s hoovered the flat thrice weekly without complaint ever since.

In case you’re concerned, referring to her as female isn’t innate sexism revealing itself, it’s simply a reflection of her female voice…

Photo-a-day 39: Odometer excitement

20120208-131201.jpg

I guess there’s no rational reason to feel a twinge of excitement when one’s car odometer reaches a figure like this… but it still happens!

Photo-a-day 38: Lacking perspective

20120207-190205.jpg

This has been sat on my kitchen table for a few days now… and yet I’ve only just noticed the word in the cover image. Duh.
